An exclusive podcast on Aarogya Setu App, India’s renown COVID19 open-source digital service
“Fun fact, when our Honourable Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi Ji discussed the app on the TV, we suddenly saw a spike of 15 million requests per minute.”- Niharika Arora, Core Member, Aarogya Setu App.
The gist of the discussion
Game of Growth podcast episode 9 brings you the discussion about much-talked application across the globe- Aarogya Setu. Niharika Arora is one of the core developers of the app along with many other volunteers who came forward to contribute towards the Indian government’s innovative platform. Niharika currently works as the senior software engineer at 1mg. Aarogya Setu is an open-source CoVID-19 platform that helps in collecting data which further helps in tracking, mapping, and assessment of the noble coronavirus spread in India, the world’s second-most populous country.
Niharika explains the architecture of the Aarogya Setu app which reached more than 100 million+ downloads in just 40 days since it’s inception,
“Let me start with App front end -The core of the AarogyaSetu app is Bluetooth, we are using Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE) which is designed to provide significantly lower power consumption.BLE works with advertisements and scanning. The device in the central role scans, looking for advertisement, and the device in the peripheral role makes the advertisement. Initially while implementing BLE, we faced some technical challenges like how to handle collision handling and packets dropping when there are a large number of devices around for scanning as well as advertisement.”
She explains further about the backend part of the App’s architecture along with much other useful information.
Niharika further explained in detail about how the ecosystem is using the application,
“There are multiple ways the ecosystem is using the app, like:
a)AarogyaSetu is currently being used by more than 130 million users and is available in 12 different languages and we are glad to see that people believe and trust this app.
With these great numbers, we have been able to create a dashboard for the government officials where they can see the anonymized data by geographies (both city and state level) to get a clear understanding of emerging COVID hotspots. This along with contact tracing has helped the government efforts in identifying users who are at risk of COVID-19 and help them out in every possible way.
b) There is also an option for a user to assess themselves and let the government know if they need help.
c) A very good feature which I use the most in the app is nearby stats which is available in five distance ranges i.e [0.5km, 1Km, 2Km, 5Km, 10Km]. One can get information like :
- The number of COVID-19 positive users.
- The total number of Aarogya Setu users.
- The number of users who came in Bluetooth proximity to a COVID-19 patient.
- Users count who have taken self-assessment.
- Users count who are tagged “unwell” based on reported symptoms in self-assessment.
d) Also, as many employers, service providers, RWAs and Malls are using AarogyaSetu for entry or providing service, and to ensure people are not faking the status or the app, we have implemented QR code validation.”
Listen to the complete discussion above to know more about the Aarogya Setu app, it’s development, how the scale was handled, who are the funders, and more.
